I had read that tidbit from Gaile about how the formula is secret, but I didn't realize that she said they were supposed to get worse each time you opened them.

Does that mean if you opened them for a theoretical 10th time they would only give out a white and 50g?

I can't open any chests on my Warrior Grim even thought it's passed 30 days. Guess I need to figure out the formula to open up more chests.

Started opening chests on my W and began from the Keys. I actually got golds from teh starter island and Kourna, but when I went to Vabbi I got a purple so I'm not sure if the quality of drops depends on how many chests opened so far on that third go. Maybe I should have started from ROT and gone backwards?

Sorry to bring this up again, but the so called "secret formula" is still... lets say... puzzling me...

So lets see, between the 2nd chest reset and the recent 3rd chest reset, my dervish did... absolutely nothing... and could open all the chests for a 3rd time.

Now my primary character(ranger) between the same time spawn(from the last 2 resets) did quests, missions, farmed, explored, etc... and cant open any chests for a third time(a week has passed since i opened them with my dervish).

So based on this, im suppose to do nothing to open the chests now?

I know this isn't that big a deal, just don't get why the chests don't reset at the same time for a specific account.

Clarify for me: how many of you did not open every single chest on the same day (opened them varying days since the Jan reset), and can now start opening the ones they did open right after the reset for the 3rd time.

Example: opened Mirror of Lyss chest 1/20, opened Jahai Bluffs 2/3, can now reopen Mirror of Lyss chest.

Warrior and Ranger- Opened all chests ~20/12, Opened all chests 19/1 Cannot open any for the 3rd time.

Monk - Opened all chests except newbie island 20/12, Opened all except newbie island chests 19/1. Cannot open any chests for a 3rd time (newbie islands ones remain unopened).

Ele - Opened 2 newbie island chests ~20/12. Opened 2 newbie island 19/1 opened Marga coast and jahai blufs on an intervening date. Opened 2 newbie island chests 3rd time, Marga coast and jahai blufs for the 2nd time 20/2.

Other 6 toons - Opened all reachable chests (depending on progress) ~20/12 and others as they reached them (including one as late as 17/1). Reopened all chests 19/1, opened other chests as progress continued. Cannnot open any chests for a 3rd time.other chests as progress continued. Cannnot open any chests for a 3rd time.

in order of appearance for me. except the crevice do not touch ones.

it's totally puzzling to I think everyone, strangely including Gaile herself. I think that the devs are way beyond her yet again, and not really letting her into the meetings

I still cannot open any chests for the third time on my characters.

My mesmer opened them for the second round around Jan 21th, my elementalist a few days later. But they both still can't open any chests as of yesterday. Both of them have finished Nightfall before opening the first round.

I made my mesmer one day after Prophecies's initial launch date (April 27th 2005), mainly because I wanted to change his name a bit.

Now now, please put this info to good use and figure out the formula for us. XD

Hmm it may sound far fetched, but maybe to open chests again you have to do nothing. Here's what I meant : maybe the chests open for char A if it has been played less than X hours in the current month. It may be to give a bonus to casual players, however if it's that, it will force players to focus to 1-2 characters in order to get the chests.

Is there someone who can open the chests a third time with a character that has been played more then one who hasn't (I don't know if the question is clear)?

*cue eye roll* Great, another gambling mini-game in Guild Wars. I already gave up on chest running because I got sick of seeing worthless, req. 13 crap fall out of every chest I opened. The potential value of any chest item just isn't worth the price of keys anymore.

So what if there's a chance I'll get a gem and a nice pile of gold? Dealing with 50 mobs to get to some little box, only to get jerked around with some stupid formula isn't my idea of fun. Why does there even have to be a formula in the first place? Make them reset every 30 days for every character, with a gold item/gem and some coin in each. Real simple, everyone wins, we all go back to town happy.

And from a coding standpoint, it would seem much easier to just have some lines of code defining a timer than some elaborate chart/table/whatever determining which character has done what, how many hours played, which chests opened, previous value of item(s) given, color of Mhenlo's underwear of the day, alignment of the planets, etc. You know the adage KISS right? Well do just that, keep it simple stupid!

That is exactly what I just saw! Ran the chests for the third time, and following Gaile's advice, started from RoT. The first 4 or 5 were quality drops, with full cash. By the time I got to Vabbi, the cash started to drop by about 10-20%. By the end, in Istan, it was purple sludge, and only ~350 gold each.

I'm definitely always running from the end backwards!

I don't think I could play my mesmer or elementalist (both of which have finished nightfall and gone into "resting" mode long before this whole treasure chest thing happened) any less than I do now.

I think it might work the other way around; the chests will be re-filled if you play a character often enough (hour-wise) or it may be related to EXP-gain for each character too. I can't test this hypothesis though because I don't have much time to play.

So far the only one of my chars who's been able to open for a third time is the Paragon, and I hadn't played her at all since the Jan 19th reset...

I tried randomly again last night with my ele, that opened all chests on 01/19 (I thought it was a bug so rushed). Nada, zero, zip... I tested Istani, Vabbi, Nightfallen Jahai.
Tried with Necro, who opened all before Desolation on 01/19 and got same thing.
So far this is not time based, I am absolutely sure of that.
I might test in April - May again... so far, this is BS and not worth my attention anymore.

I'm puzzled what the formula might be. All but one of my characters have opened the chests successfully the third time, but they haven't been able to get one or two random treasures each (usually the Forum highlands one). My necro, however, still hasn't had any luck with any treasure. Maybe there's some formula on how many chests you can open at one time per account, but that seems rather unfair, seeing that some people can't open them 3rd time more than 1-2 toons.

Puzzling!

I'm suspecting that the formula might have 2 factors in it. It's not just time (because some people can't open them after 30 days), and can't be something like EXP gain or hours play ALONE because that might lead to excessive farming.

I still cannot open any of them for the third time though...

I cant get them a third time either. on any of my 17 usuable chars.

But i do know a friend of mine was able to on a couple chars of his. I say we string ANERF up for this. or beat them like this.
